KUCHING: More young entrepreneurs should be nurtured to develop more small-medium enterprises (SMEs) to uplift the economic growth of the state and country.
FAME International College Malaysia (FAME) chief executive officer David Chew said this strategy has been proven to be successful in developed countries such as Japan, Korea and Taiwan where economic growth is spearheaded by SME activities run by young entrepreneurs.
As such, he said it was crucial for the state to look into producing quality young entrepreneurs.
“The percentage contribution of SMEs to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) or total value-added ranges from 60 per cent in China, 57 per cent in Germany, 55.3 per cent in Japan and 50 per cent in Korea compared to the 47.3 percent attained by Malaysia.
“Therefore, we have to look into producing more young entrepreneurs to develop more SMEs in the state,” he said.
Chew pointed out that apart from the availability of entrepreneurship diploma or degree courses that enable the new generation to face challenges in today’s complex business environment, associations such as Sarawak Entrepreneurs Association (SEA) serve as a platform to nurture entrepreneurship among the young generation.
“As such, FAME and SEA have decided to develop a joint partnership in promoting business networking opportunities among Malaysian companies, SEA members and FAME Young Entrepreneur Club (YEC) members,” he said at the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony between the college and association here yesterday.
“This joint partnership will constitute a long-term and mutually beneficial cooperation to provide a channel for networking, interaction and knowledge for FEC members while SEA members will play their part in mentoring, guiding and reinforcing the association as a platform to promote up-and-coming entrepreneurs in Sarawak,” Chew added.
Chew and SEA chairman Simon Wong both signed the MoU to establish the joint partnership in a ceremony witnessed by Malaysian Industrial Development Authority (Mida) Sarawak director Ruhizam Idris.
Meanwhile, Wong said both parties will jointly establish an executive committee to implement activities and programmes upon signing of the MoU.
“This includes developing an SME networking community with FAME to jointly administer, promote and manage the Entrepreneur Incubation Programme, to jointly organise business forums, seminars and exhibitions to promote Malaysian products and services abroad, to provide awareness of FAME in SEA’s website, to assist SEA on FAME’s part to build its brand presence locally and regionally by supporting the promotion and publicity of its events, to jointly promote FAME’s activities and student works to SEA members, to jointly develop an SEA web portal, and to promote the usage and facilities
of SEA’s upcoming iSpace shared office space among YEC members,” he noted.
SEA is a non-profit organisation that aims to grow professional and young entrepreneurs in the state by providing an open platform and mentors from various backgrounds to support and guide up-and-coming entrepreneurs in the planning, building and promotion of ideas and businesses.
The association aims to be a bridging link between Sarawakian entrepreneurs and the government for resources and support necessary to start, build and expand their enterprises.
